Try these strategies at home with your children.
Pray with your child for God’s help to memorize.
Encourage your children and memorize the verses along with them!
Use repetition as much as possible by repeating the verse over and over again.
Write individual words or phrases on 3×5 index cards. Shuffle them and ask your child to arrange them in order.
Read the verse out loud several times until your child can pronounce all the words correctly.
Help your child understand the verse by restating it in your own words. It’s much easier to memorize when you understand the meaning.
Draw pictures, create hand motions, clap it out, get up and move.
Help your child identify the main subject, verb, and objects in each sentence of the verse.
Put parentheses around phrases. Example — Titus 3:5: (Not by works of righteousness) (which we have done) (but according to His mercy) (He saved us).
Write out the first letter of each word. Example — Romans 5:1: T B J B F, W H P W G T O L J C.
Write the verse on a chalkboard or dry erase board. Erase a word at a time until your child knows the entire verse.
Write verses on index cards to carry throughout the week. Review while waiting for the bus, in the car, or at bedtime.
Use a familiar tune. Awana provides audio downloads at Club Resources.
